Club Assembly
In case members do not remember some of my goals for the club this year were to Re-engage with the Local Community and Initiate ONE NEW project in Youth & Vocation / Community / International.
The Chairs have listened and have worked very hard over the past months, so it was extremely pleasing to hear the updates from them at Club Assembly. These goals are being met and it was also interesting to hear some of our members say “I did not know the club was doing this!
We will get updates out about these activities on future bulletins and our website.
Sincere thanks to the chairs for their efforts over the past few months.
City of Boroondara (COB)
I attended a Civic reception last week in honor of the COB’s new Mayor – Councillor Lisa Hollingsworth pictured on the left. Lisa is certainly a friend of this club and in due course will be inducted as an honorary member which is our usual practice.
The other point to note is that the outgoing Mayor - Felicity Sinfield has been voted in as the Deputy Mayor so we have two very good contacts at the COB with whom we can work.
It is through this collaboration that we will continue to seek to understand what the needs are in our “Locality and Municipality” which is where we need to do Rotary work.
Speaking of the COB, they have reached out to me indicating that they wish to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with our club to provide sponsorship for the Art Show for another three years. Fantastic support to our club!
The final event for this year is on 12th December – Club Christmas Event so I look forward to seeing you there.
Let’s work together, to take action to create hope in the world and in our local communities.

‘Tis the season to be jolly’ they say. And jolly they sure were at our Christmas ‘edition’ of the Hawthorn Makers Market on Sunday 3rd December. There were hundreds of gifts for every reason and every season- naturally with the focus on Christmas gift giving.
In fact, we smashed past records attracting the best ever attendance since our beginning as managers of the Market 9 years ago. The festive atmosphere was in full swing. Everyone was happy. Stallholders and visitors were up for a good chat with several stallholders ending the day ‘empty’ handed. Such as Simone from Crisp Produce and Preserves. “I’ve sold most of what I brought to the Market today. It’s virtually all gone… One of my best days ever. Not much left to take home...”
After a dreary week of intermittent drizzle, last Sunday cleared up with plenty of warmth and sunshine, the perfect ingredient for the final 2023 HMM.
Patrons were treated to a full house and a variety of stalls of gourmet foods, specially made Christmas items and the usual handmade reliable fare we’ve learnt to expect.
There was also a variety of entertainment including Phil the accordion player and a variety of other activities with the face painter drawing a constant queue of eager children.
The market broke all previous records with 70 stallholders and over 1,200 visitors. Needless to say, there was constant buzz and loads of happy faces.
Our launch 2024 Hawthorn Makers Market is on Sunday 3rd March, 2024. We look forward to starting 2024 where we left off 2023.

We all had a wonderful night of fellowship and getting to know these young leaders of the future.
All four young leaders were so glad to be sponsored by Camberwell Rotary and given an opportunity at leadership training.
In Rotary D9800 - that is over 71 Clubs in total - Camberwell Rotary had the most number of young leaders at the Camp with 4 out of 28 at Camp Getaway.
DG Ron Payne was the guest speaker (Rotary Club of Eaglehawk) - we were able to press the flesh, say good day to his wife Marg and reinforce Camberwell Rotary's commitment to promote young leaders in our community.
It was a proud moment for Michael Blood and I to represent the Club at this event and important someone from the Club was there - although it was a late night return to Melbourne.
We have asked our new RYLA young leaders to return to our Club next year and share their experiences .
Many thanks to Club members Michael Mullins and Pierre Kriegler who put their hand up to drive to Bendigo on Saturday, and return our young leaders to Melbourne.

These events are a must attend as they are a great opportunity to meet other community clubs and their executives. For example the Presidents of the North Balwyn and Burwood Bowls club, Camberwell Hockey Club president, Camberwell Magpies Senior & Junior Cricket Club presidents, Amanda Donohoe, Servants Community Housing, President RC Glenferrie to name a few.
16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence 2023

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign led annually by UN Women. It runs every year from 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day).
We all deserve to be safe, equal and respected. But on average, a woman in Australia is killed by a man they know every 10 days. It doesn't have to be this way.
During the 16 Days of Activism, communities around the world join the call to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

Members are asked to bring donated toys or vouchers from toy selling stores (Kmart, Target, etc) to meetings until and including the 6th December. Ages range from very young to teenagers. The gifts will be passed on to St Vinnies who in turn will distribute them to families they assist who live in Boroondara based public housing.

The Red Cross is currently looking for volunteers to visit residents of The Gables in Riversdale Road, Camberwell. Your visit will not only bring them joy but also support their social connection and improve their wellbeing.

Following a lot of behind the scenes work by Job Oppy and his Art Show Committee, dates have now been locked in for the 2024 Camberwell Art Show: Sat 22 - Sun 30 June at Swinburne University (ATC Building). The Gala Opening is on Friday 21st June.
