With the ongoing closure of the Conochie Centre due to a burst pipe, our last meeting was held at Blue River, Thai Restaurant, just a few doors away on Canterbury Road. All indications are members enjoyed the food and fellowship. Other than inconveniencing one table occupied by non-Rotarians, the night went reasonably smoothly. Thanks to Patrick Docherty who made booking arrangements and David Baker for providing a microphone and amplifier.
Our guest speaker Maxine Gross, agreed to attend despite the challenge of not having a data projector. As the 2023 recipient Boroondara Citizen of the year, she did not fail to inspire as she outlined the purpose of the charity she co-founded, You Matter. Maxine and her organisation support women and families who have experienced family violence by providing furniture and other household items necessary to run a functional home, through referrals from Agencies. Once an affected family has received housing, her team sources and embark on furnishing the home customised to suit individual needs. She refers to these as ‘havens’ – a safe, comfortable space a family experiencing trauma can enjoy. You Matter relies on donated goods, often sourced from RIMERN or other Rotary relief centres and others. An impressive initiative which started with a simple idea with ever increasing need for their services.
The Camberwell Art Show Gala night will be held on 23 June 2023. Please encourage your network of friends and family to attend this great event as well as promote the exhibition over the week to follow. Members have been sent instructions to complete a Swinburne Induction Training session online. This is a compulsory requirement for anyone working on the premises during the Art show. Kindly complete this task at your earliest convenience. There is a knowledge test at the end of the session with opportunity to repeat the test, if required.

Again, next week Wednesday 14 June, we are unable to meet at Conochie Centre. We will instead meet at the Zelman Room, Hawthorn Arts Centre, 360 Burwood Road, Hawthorn. The guest speaker will be PDG Murray Verso. Murray was recently awarded the prestigious Citation for Meritorious Service for his decades of leadership for The Rotary Foundation, awarded to a single Rotarian in each District. Importantly Murray will outline what I believe is the final stage of the End Polio Now project. He will share some interesting strategic initiatives as well as report on the efforts of dedicated volunteers in spite of threats to their personal safety, who continue the fight to end polio.
On this night we will farewell and thank outgoing President Fabienne Nichola and welcome incoming President George de Souza. This is the Club's Premiere Event for the year, so dress to impress and come along to thank our two Presidents.
