District Governor Visit 2nd October 2024
 
We had one of the best, actually in my opinion, ‘The Best’ Dinner Meeting night in my term as President. Not only did we have a fantastic attendance of members – 37 to be exact, we also had 7 visitors who included our current District Governor, Michael Lapina and his aide Alex Lapina, Rotary Community Group Leader Michael Stillwell and three prospective members. The numbers would have been even higher but unfortunately we had two members withdraw at late notice due to illness.
 
 
However,  on the night a little birdie told me that Michael was raising funds for his ‘Walk With Us’ End Polio Now campaign and that he would sing if members were prepared to contribute to his donation page. At that point he was 33rd on the list of fundraisers and had a very simple  target of $1000.00.
 
So I asked the question of members and received a resounding YES!  At the time of writing this Michael has jumped from 33rd to 2nd on the leaderboard thanks to donations from Camberwell members and a sizeable donation from the Rotary Club of Rochester.  The link to Michael’s page is https://www.rotarywalkwithus.org/fundraisers/MichaelLapina for those wishing to contribute.
 
Apart from his song Michael also made some very interesting points:
 
  • The annual Presidential theme will cease. Instead the RI Board will set a message for a three year period
  • We need to give our members: an ‘Irresistible Membership Experience’. ‘Healing a divided World’ starts with addressing internal divides within our club. ‘Mentorship’ will support and ensure ‘Continuity’
  • We have permission to do things differently
  • Rotary needs our Uniqueness, Passion, and Commitment
  • We need to look at our Rotary community and ask - is our purpose for being in Rotary still being satisfied and do we feel we still belong? Why do we come to Rotary?
  • Have conversations with our members! Look out for each other.
 
 
Club Service Recognitions
 
It was also my pleasure to recognise the Membership Milestones of three of our members – Michael  Blood, Pierre Kriegler and Adrian Campbell (unfortunately ill on the night). They have collectively clocked up 88 years of service with the Club.
 
 
Unfortunately Adrian Campbell who will complete 15 years this weekend was ill and could not attend so we will postpone his presentation until his return. Adrian is a wonderful advocate for Myeloma sufferers and a very hard working member of our Rotary Outreach Myeloma Program (ROMP) Committee, as well as being our Youth & Vocation Committee Chair. Adrian was instrumental in the Seeds of Peace initiative which saw our club receive the RSL ANZAC Peace Prize for 2017- the first by any Rotary Club!
 
Again a wonderful night in which we were able to hear a different voice in more ways than one being our District Governor and his message and to also recognise and celebrate our long serving members.
 
We have our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 9th October and I look forward to seeing as many members there as possible.  At the meeting - we will induct a new member, present our 2023-2024 Annual Report, look toward appointments for 2025-2026 and discuss the outcome of discussions with BASSCare in regard to redevelopment of the site and way forward.

A Reminder when Tin-Rattling at the Sunday Market
As you all know, volunteering at the Camberwell Sunday Market is an important part of our fundraising, as well as showing support to our Cluster Club the Rotary Club of Balwyn.
 
We have recently received communication from RC Balwyn outlining a 30% reduction in the gate takings over the last two years. Their report acknowledges that many of the reasons are outside their or our control (eg cost of living increases, cultural issues, younger age of patrons), the one thing we can influence is our engagement while greeting the Market patrons. 
 
So in Balwyn Rotary's communication: The Market Committee requests that all volunteers be more engaging in welcoming patrons to the market and seeking a donation. We are not asking for aggression, be more engaging which encourages patrons to contribute. 
 
Please keep this in mind during your next and subsequent Market Roster sessions.

Camp Getaway Working Bee - 28th Feb 25 – 2 Mar 25
 
Camp Getaway provides a quality recreational camp experience for people of all abilities. The target groups assisted at Camp Getaway are people with disabilities and special needs.
 
The Rotary Club of Camberwell has booked the dates above and we will again be assisted by our former member and now retired painter – Andy Spry.
 
Thousands of voluntary hours have gone into redeveloping the site, which now includes self-contained units with full disabled facilities, modern dormitories and many other improvements.
 
This working bee at Camp Getaway is a weekend away and provides a great opportunity for club fellowship. As there is always refurbishment and maintenance activities to be done this is a great hands-on Community project for our Club.
