FORaMEAL Packing Event – Conochie Hall 14th February 24

Camberwell Rotary, as it does every year through the Community Services Committee, sponsored the Canterbury Rotary FORaMEAL packing event.
There were twenty-three members from Camberwell and surprisingly at least twenty guests who had been invited by the members that did attend. Only four tables, but more than 14,000 meal packs were packed.

Our guests came from everywhere. One guest came because he had just moved into Camberwell and reached out to us because he wanted to do some volunteer work. Another guest was a former Rotarian in Hong Kong who happened to have a conversation with Yvonne Wills at a shop. A number of guests came because they had seen a post by Justine on her social media pages and wanted to support. Our two Rotarians from Nigeria also lent a hand.

This only goes to prove that if you “Do not ask you Do not get told” and secondly “It pays to Advertise.” See the full story and videos on our website.
Unfortunately, at the end of the evening I was advised that Bern Connell a former member and Past President 2002 / 2003 had passed away earlier in the evening. Funeral details will be advised when received.

I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 21st February 24. Our guest speaker is a potential member Amadini Perera who work as a Risk & Compliance manager at Beyond Blue.

Let’s work together, to take action to create hope in the world and in our local communities.
Have a great week in Rotary

FORaMeal Packing Night 14 Feb 2024

The evening of Wednesday of 14 February 2024 was the FORaMeal packing night. It is a rewarding all club activity together with their family and friends who packed in excess of 14,000 food packs as emergency relief meals for those impacted by natural disasters. A project of our sister club Canterbury Rotary Club, it has become a much-anticipated annual club event. 23 members and 20 guests attended the night.

Each year over 250,000 meals are packed by Rotarians and volunteers to vulnerable individuals and families across the Asia Pacific region in times of disaster. To date, over 800,000 meals have been distributed free of charge.

Thank you to all who attended including a number of Justine Paragreen work colleagues, prospective members Victor Wang and Amadini Perera. Special mention to Matt Britten and Janet Mok who attended this Rotary event for the first time immediately following their membership enquiry. Our gratitude for coordinating this successful event goes to the Community Committee chaired by Jo-Anne Tamlyn.

Team Vista Update
Former Camberwell Rotary Club member Kerry Anne Frost (centre) continues to be actively involved in Team Vista. Their goal is to is to empower young people in Moshi, Tanzania, Africa to improve their lives and better support their community through quality education. This includes building of the infrastructure and providing school supplies. The Camberwell Rotary Club has supported this project for many years. Below is an extract from their latest community update:

Education Update
At Team Vista, our newly established home boasts a spacious room transformed into a vibrant classroom, enhanced by its light, airy atmosphere and improved with two fans installed by our own Moses. This inviting space serves as a learning hub for primary students grappling with English, who receive dedicated lessons from our sponsored teachers, Ernest and Angel, each afternoon.
Recognising the importance of nourishment alongside education, we ensure these young learners are provided with afternoon tea following their lessons, a crucial supplement given that many lack a reliable evening meal. The educational support extends to Form Two students, who have previously struggled with mathematics, now finding the subject both enjoyable and engaging under the guidance of Peter, Imrani, Lembris, and Kerry.

Hawthorn Makers Market – Continuing Agreement
I am very pleased to advise that I have just signed on behalf of Camberwell Rotary the Market agreement with the City of Boroondara.

This new agreement is the fourth RC Camberwell will be signing with the last three being almost identical and covering three-year periods, whereas this is a four-year agreement which also endorses the use of the car park area adjacent to Kent Street.

This is testament to the efforts of Teresa and Graeme and demonstrates confidence by council in our club.
