Volume 67 | Issue 21 |  28 November 2022

We gather together on the lands of the traditional custodians, the Wurundjeri and Woi Wurrung people. We pay our respects to all of Melbourne’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and to our shared future together.

It was great to welcome esteemed long-standing member and Almoner Richard Gray at last week’s meeting after his loving wife and great supporter of our club, Helen Gray, sadly passed away recently.

Members also heard guest speaker Andrew Campbell and his colleague Jeffrey Pang both Audiologists, who provided each member a copy of Andrew’s book ‘Health & Brain Health’. The correlation between loss of hearing and Alzheimer or Dementia was also echoed by Associate Professor Michael Woodward, Head of Aged Care Research and Memory Clinic at Austin Health at the cluster presentation on 27 September this year.

Loss of hearing is a risk factor for further health complications as it can lead to a decline in cognitive levels, particularly when associated with social isolation. The presentation was both informative and increased our awareness of vital preventative measures and the potential consequences of not seeking audiological evaluation for our loves ones as well as ourselves.

Following members’ feedback at the last Club Forum, Committee Chairs will present an overview of each of the five committees on a regular basis at club meetings. Last week, Tim Landsberg, Chair of the International Committee provided the first of a series of committee updates.

Members are encouraged to consider potential members from their network of colleagues, friends and family over the Christmas break. Being introduced by an existing member is the most common reason for joining Rotary. ‘Each one, bring one’ will be held at a meeting on the 8 February 2023. Further details to follow early in 2023.

The final Hawthorn Makers Market for the calendar year will be held this Sunday 4 December 2022. This has been dubbed our Christmas market and has proved well supported by both the number of stalls and visitors to the market. A roster notification has been emailed. Please support the market and sign up to assist and make this market day the most successful yet.

An End Polio fundraiser will be held on Monday the 5 December 2022. Please support this club fundraiser and book to see the movie ‘The Lost King’. Booking details have been sent by email and also in the Bulletin or contact Secretary Justine Paragreen. A dinner will take place after the movie.

Please book for the club’s Christmas function on Wednesday 14 December 2022. It is one of the club’s signature celebrations comprising a lovely two-course meal and enjoyable entertainment, to mark off the half way mark of the Rotary year and a well-earned upcoming holiday break.

Thank you to Nick Pane and Gary Goldsmith for assisting at the last Camberwell Sunday market.

Next week’s meeting will be the Annual General Meeting. It is expected to take up a relatively short part of the meeting, giving members more time for fellowship. Please register your attendance.

Look forward to seeing you then.
