General Meeting – Conochie Hall, 29 November 2023
Thank you to all members who attended and to those members who put forward their point of view. The two main points put forward for discussion were:
Frank Leigh - Discuss current membership numbers and how we may arrest the decline
The discussions essentially centered around perceived issues in attracting members, issues in retaining members, what we should do to attract members and how potentially to retain them for the long term. None of what was raised was new!
From my perspective the club in NOT in decline. Yes, we did have more members at one stage than we do now, however we need to understand that the world has changed.
Some of the initiatives are occurring through our avenues of service so I would encourage members to attend our Club Assembly to hear what we are doing as a club.
I also advised that there are several initiatives in play which members may not be aware of so as a board we need to discuss this and bring it to the attention of members.
Adrian Campbell – In the spirit of Peace & Conflict Resolution can we approach welfare agencies or Council to offer our financial services to displaced individuals and families from the Israel / Palestine conflict that could well end up in Boroondara?
This topic did not get a lot of discussion except to say that we need to work with the City of Boroondara to understand the needs and there is no doubt that we as a club would support any appropriate initiative.
District Governor Nomination for 2026 - 2027
Just an update that Graeme Hope for has been formally nominated for the position of District Governor, District 9800 Inc. for the Rotary Year 2026 – 2027.

16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence 2023
Start the conversation and get people talking.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign led annually by UN Women. It runs every year from 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day).
We all deserve to be safe, equal and respected. But on average, a woman in Australia is killed by a man they know every 10 days. It doesn't have to be this way.
During the 16 Days of Activism, communities around the world join the call to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.
The excellent article about RIMERN in the Brunswick Voice (see link HERE) was written by the son of one of our retired and very popular Camberwell Rotary members, John Phillips. Many of our older members will remember John well.
EVERY year tens of thousands of tonnes of perfectly good furniture and appliances end up in landfill, but a Brunswick East organisation is giving household items a second life in the home of someone who really needs them.
Jo-Anne Tamlyn is coordinating this project for Camberwell Rotary Club so any if interested members or friends of members wanting to learn more or be involved could contact her first, it would be greatly appreciated. Jtamlyn@westnet.com.au or 0437461925.
Members are asked to bring donated toys or vouchers from toy selling stores (Kmart, Target, etc) to meetings until and including the 6th December. Ages range from very young to teenagers. The gifts will be passed on to St Vinnies who in turn will distribute them to families they assist who live in Boroondara based public housing.

The Red Cross is currently looking for volunteers to visit residents of The Gables in Riversdale Road, Camberwell. Your visit will not only bring them joy but also support their social connection and improve their wellbeing.

The current RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership Camp will move to Camp Getaway at Axedale near Bendigo next month.
It is expected that nominating Clubs like Camberwell will pick up their young participants and return them to Melbourne - when the Camp finishes.
So, are any Club members prepared to drive to Camp Getaway on SAT 9TH DEC to collect three of our young leaders and depart back to Melbourne at 1.00 PM
This is a yearly leadership event that Camberwell Rotary has supported and participated in over the last 25 years.

Following a lot of behind the scenes work by Job Oppy and his Art Show Committee, dates have now been locked in for the 2024 Camberwell Art Show: Sat 22 - Sun 30 June at Swinburne University (ATC Building). The Gala Opening is on Friday 21st June.

Imagine Rotary District 9800 Annual Report 2022–2023
Rotary International District 9800 Annual Report 2022–2023, approved at District AGM on 16 November 2023, is an insufficient snapshot of all that great work, but serves as an insight into the energy and collaboration that fuels our members, to make the difference you do.
Our Rotary International President 2022–2023, Jennifer Jones took the opportunity to review the report and described our District’s year as “Epic!”, asking me to convey her congratulations and gratitude to all our members, especially for hosting the world at Rotary International Convention 2023 Melbourne.
More than anything, I hope this report captures some of the fun we had on the way. Fellowship and friendships are a signature characteristic of the Rotary experience; I know my experience as Governor will sustain me for a long time to come.
Thank you and congratulations for the good that you do, and I hope for all our clubs' continued success.
