We gather together on the lands of the traditional custodians, the Wurundjeri and Woi Wurrung people. We pay our respects to all of Melbourne’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and to our shared future together.

David McNamara, CEO of Foodbank Victoria addressed the club last week as our guest speaker. Camberwell Rotary Club was heavily involved in Foodbank’s beginnings and continue to support their work. David was a former Chef prior to his role at Foodbank. He expressed the importance of sharing a family meal as crucial for family connection and social interaction. This is reflected in other settings including at our club dinner meetings.
Foodbank’s role was magnified during the challenging times of the pandemic. Under David’s leadership, Foodbank secured healthy food supplies donations directly from its primary source and as a result provided support to the needs of local farmers. Its activities have been responsive and targeted to ensure food reaches the neediest such as overseas students, new arrivals either as displaced people or immigrants as well as asylum seekers in urban and regional areas. In the process, Foodbank pivoted the types of meals and its distribution methods to cater for the community’s ethnic diversity. He also recently led a healthy school breakfast program providing breakfast to 25,000 children across Victoria at 500 of the most disadvantaged primary schools in the state. David impressed us with his warmth, insights, leadership skills, compassion, commitment and passion as the CEO of Foodbank Victoria since July 2013.

The “Bert Stevens Apprentice Scholarship” is presented annually and is sponsored by the Vocational Committee of the Rotary Club of Camberwell. It is named in honour of a legendary charter member of our Club.
Bert commenced his distinguished career as an apprentice butcher, and eventually become a leader in the Meat Industry in Victoria.
The scholarship for the Rotary year 2021-2022 was awarded to Ohanes Nanahj, who has just completed his Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology and is entering the final year of his apprenticeship in 2023. His long- term goal is to continue in his chosen field and excel to become an industry leader. Michael Blood, Vocational Committee member, was present at the Awards Dinner and was asked to present the scholarship on behalf of our Club.
Our Rotary Club has been a long time sponsor in the Apprentice area, formerly at Holmesglen TAFE, but more recently at the Box Hill Institute. The Institute is very grateful to all its sponsors for their support of students. These sponsors include the Arnost Family, Clayton Utz, Hesta, The Moke Owners Association of Victoria and the Rotary Clubs of Camberwell, Mont Albert and Surrey Hills, Box Hill Central, Forest Hills and Doncaster.
In coming weeks, Ohanes will come to one of our Club meetings to meet our membership.
