Medical Mission in the Philippines, October 2023
Just want to give you a quick update on my involvement with the Medical Mission to the Philippines in October 23. More information will follow in the weeks to come.
The mission location was on the island of Panay in Antique province. There were twenty-one of us (11 non rotarians) and we visited a different community each day over a d day period
We were met in Culasi (basecamp) by 5 Rotarians (pictured below with organiser Doug Hawley) from the club of Bacolod North who had travelled over 300 kilometres to welcome us. What a special treat for us and them
Of the 30 or so previous missions this was the most expansive in terms of activities undertaken
Over the five days roughly 2,025 people screened
For eyes:
205 cataract operations
135 pterygium operations
200 each of reading glasses and sunglasses were given out
Many perforated eardrums were seen resulting from the use of cotton buds
It was an extremely humbling, satisfying and rewarding trip and am so glad I participated as it is the reason why I joined Rotary - to do hands on work in our local and international community.
Regionalisation Project – Community Groups & Regional Council Election
Community Groups
At the club meeting of 25 October 2023, 21 members were surveyed and arrived at the club’s preference for a Community Group. Therefore, members who were NOT in attendance are requested to provide their agreement or otherwise to the members’ input as soon as possible. This is important to accurately reflect the overall club preference.
Following the completion of this process, a single club vote was to be submitted by the deadline of Tuesday 31 October 2023. However, this deadline has changed and is now due by 11:59pm on Sunday 12 November Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).
A very sincere thanks to PP Fabienne Nichola for managing this in my absence.
Regional Council Elections
Voting sheets have been provided to all members and it is requested that all members return the sheets to the club secretary as soon as possible to enable the club to meet district deadlines.

RIMERN is a multi-club Rotary project in Inner Melbourne, providing donated furniture, appliances and homewares to welfare agency clients who have experienced homelessness, domestic violence, refugee displacement, release from jail and other crises. www.rimern.org.au
Some RIMERN Statistics!
The year-on-year numbers for financial year 22/23 over 21/22 (our inaugural year peppered with Covid lockdowns) showed that in our second year of operations we doubled order numbers and value of goods provided. The following items were rehomed and were limited by the donations we could source! Nearly every client asks for a fridge and washing machine, if we could source more, we could distribute more... but these numbers show just how much work our volunteers have done, collecting, cleaning, testing, assembling and seeing the orders out the door! Thanks everyone, our current volumes are higher still....
Following a lot of behind the scenes work by Job Oppy and his Art Show Committee, dates have now been locked in for the 2024 Camberwell Art Show: Sat 22 - Sun 30 June at Swinburne University (ATC Building). The Gala Opening is on Friday 21st June.
Further details, artist entry arrangements etc will be announced shortly.
We are pleased to announce that Myeloma Australia will be hosting the first Greatest Call Long Lunch at The Glass House in Melbourne on Wednesday 6th March 2024. We have a huge line up of talent that will keep you entertained as well as beautiful food from The Big Group. The purpose of the event is to raise the profile of myeloma and Myeloma Australia in the wider community.
We will have some big names from the sporting commentary world that will sit alongside our Ambassador Sandy Roberts. Sandy will be joined by his friends and colleagues Bruce McAvaney, OAM, Eddie McGuire, Brian Taylor and Jennifer Keyte to name a few with musical entertainment provided by Frankie J. Holden, OAM.

The Ulumbarra Theatre is a 953-seat theater in Bendigo, Victoria. It opened in 2015 and is located on the site of the Sandhurst Goal which closed in 2004.
